This family history is presented from the viewpoints of Michael and Amanda Lord (Lord website link)
This Moulding family of Leicester has been traced back to 1749. In the earliest years the surname was variously spelt as Moreland, Moulden, Morland or even Moulin. It is those names that may prove the key to tracing the family history further back or a link to other Moulding branches in Lancashire and other places.
By and large the Moulding family kept within the limits of Leicester borough. In the Victorian years we were congregated in the Blackfriars and All Saints areas of the borough, and most of the early baptisms, marriages and burials take place at St Mary de Castro, St Nicolas and All Saints churches. It is only fairly recently that they have spread from the City to the County and beyond.
Most Mouldings of this era were lower class, with the vast majority of occupations being in the hosiery and shoe trades. A notable Moulding of this time was William Moulding, who in 1856 was a witness at the trial of Peppermint Billy, the last person to be publicly hanged in Leicester.
Although this tree currently focuses on the line of Ethel May Moulding, the great-grandmother of Amanda Lord, our distant cousins Sue Shore, Ann Fairhurst, Julie Garton and Olwyn Sherwin have contributed much of the painstaking research. Our thanks go to them for allowing their information to be used.
Michael and Amanda still live in Leicestershire, and are still researching all branches of this family. We would love to hear from anyone who as any information, either relating to the Moulding surname, or any of the associated families. We would particularly like to find pictures of our Moulding relatives, as they have so far proved elusive.
